2022 Tax Plan: Tax free allowance for working from home costs Tax News

A remote work allowance, or remote work stipend, is a monetary sum paid to employees. It’s designed to help workers cover their expenses while working remotely. It is not possible to apply both the exemption for a homework allowance and the exemption for commuting costs for one and the same working day. If an employee works from home for a part of the day and works at the fixed place of work for the other part of the day, only one of the two exemptions can be applied.

If your employer pays you an allowance towards your expenses, that amount paid is deducted from the amount you can claim back from Revenue. Note, that this is distinct from any tax relief otherwise available for employees who have to pay for their own working from home expenses . Twitter, which now allows employees to work from home permanently if they opt to, provides a $1,000 remote work allowance.

In the United Kingdom, for example, remote workers can claim £6 per week in tax relief for household costs. This is designed to cover things like increased utility bills, business call costs, and Internet bills. Remote workers can also claim tax relief on equipment that they’ve bought. Eligible customers can claim tax relief based on the rate at which they pay tax. Homeworking has become the norm for millions of people following the pandemic.

However, a standard rate would not yield the exact amount, possibly incurring a much higher payment rate. When using the reasonable method, your savings will be calculated by dividing your actual costs by the amount you use your home for work. One common way to do this is to divide your total household costs by the number of rooms you use when working from home, and/or the time you spend working from home. If they pay tax at the higher tax rate of 40% they will each get €37.20 back (40% of €93). If they pay tax at the lower rate of 20%, they will each get €18.60 back (20% of €93).

In some instances, your employer may provide a special allowance to cover the costs of this. Your employer will need to determine if this allowance is taxable or not. Some employees work one part of the day at home and the other part at the office. Here, the employer chooses to either give the working-from-home allowance or the travel allowance (0.19 cents per kilometre).

With the new demand for working at home, the Dutch government established the new working-from-home allowance that covers the basic needs of the employees and does not include payroll taxes. Next to this allowance, the travel allowance stays in existence with the rule that only one of these allowances can be applied. In the case of working from home and working from the office on the same day , only one allowance can be given. While the working-from-home allowance is not mandatory, the branch-related CAO should also be taken into consideration for the correct rules and regulations.
